After moving to Hawaii in 2010, I began to document my free-diving with schools of surgeonfish, nests of baby damselfish, and giant heads of cauliflower coral, often filming at one-hundred and twenty frames a second. Later, I found bioluminescent phytoplankton on the beach near my apartment and began incorporating phosphorescent acrylics into my paintings. Translucent by day, but activated at night, the pieces reveal a transparent overpainting of brush strokes, palette knife scrapes and representational forms.
